[Not long after the portals opened, Lilly disappeared, spontaneously and without preamble. It's not that she wanted to leave without saying goodbye to everybody - but she's impulsive, oddly socialized, and, while not a bad kid, still a bit more self-centered and a bit less empathetic than the average eight-year-old. The idea that she might be sad and miss people didn't occur to her until she left, and the idea that other people might be sad and miss her didn't occur to her at all. And then all those thoughts were banished from her mind, because she found Mama and Victoria again.

She only stayed for a few days, from her perspective, and during those days, nearly all of her time was spent trying to convince them to come right back to the Meadous with her. Mama was on board immediately. Victoria was not. There were tears, and shouting, and furiously-signed words that Victoria didn't understand and didn't particularly want to learn.

In the end, Lilly does come back, but with only one other passenger.

Her return isn't immediately obvious, because for the first week or so, she doesn't leave her house. If they go out at night, other Meadous residents might spot a tall, spindly creature lurking in the woods or skulking around the food-bearing plants, though it's nearly impossible to get a good look at; it moves fast, and will zip away the moment anyone else arrives on scene. Lilly herself starts to emerge at night too, and then a few days after that, starts coming out during daylight hours. She doesn't roam as far and wide as she used to, but she can be found throughout the village proper, and at the edges of the forest. If she doesn't recognize someone, she'll freeze, watching them carefully. If they're a friend, she'll gambol over to say hi, though not quite as exuberantly as she had in the past. She's reassured Mama that no one here is a danger, and no one is going to try to take her away. But she does still worry, just a little bit.]
